How the Lone Wolf got its name...
The Lone wolf route was created by me and my brother-in-law while searching to find as much remote gravel as possible that could be accessed from downtown Iron Mountain. Once the route was found, it quickly became one of our favorite rides to do leaving from our houses. We could get a solid 50 mile loop of pristine, hard pack, fast gravel, accompanied by chunky steep, climbs, and rowdy descents.
While on one of our spring rides, we were both bar to bar climbing out of a big trough when he looked up and whispered to me “Wolf”-“Wolf”. At the crest of the hill trotted one of the largest gray wolves I’ve ever seen, and as being spring time was losing much of its coat, giving it a mangy rough appearance. As soon as we laid eyes on it, it looked over its right shoulder back at us and kept a steady trot up and over the crest. Thankfully It stepped off into the forest and let us pass. That route was dubbed the Lone wolf route from there on.
